Choosing the right individual to join a team is a critical decision for a leader, so getting it right is key. This can be particularly tricky given the many hybrid or remote hires. The cost of a poor fit is not only financial – it also has a ripple effect on the morale of leaders and teams.
Taking the time to ensure a good fit by using assessments that tie to the competencies of the open role and corporate culture, especially when coupled with probing interview questions, will support greater success in hiring and onboarding new talent. Capacity Group works with client organizations to help them define critical areas for alignment during the hiring process, and to assess candidates for role and culture fit. An assessment tool we use is the Hogan Insight Series.
The goal of using assessments is multifold: to provide insights not otherwise found in the normal selection process, to pinpoint areas to explore more deeply, or to assist in the candidate’s effective transition into the role. Assessment tools supplement the thorough examination of a candidate’s technical depth, knowledge, experience, and skills.
There are three key steps to our process with client organizations:
- Gain an understanding of their culture and the open role through conversations with the hiring manager and HR.
- Map the role and cultural attributes to Hogan scales to serve as a rubric for determining the level of fit.
- Analyze each candidate’s Hogan results against the rubric, and identify specific areas to explore to complete a thorough assessment of fit.
Ultimately, a new hire who shares some of the key motivational values of the existing team is more likely to succeed when there is alignment. Imagine hiring talent for an existing team where interaction and connection are important to the team culture and essential to getting the work done. In this case, the interview process should include diagnostics and questions to uncover how a candidate would handle working within this team’s culture.
Once hired, supporting a new candidate’s integration can be directly tied to performance and retention. Often, Capacity Group is engaged to provide integration coaching with the goal of accelerating a new leader’s performance and success.
At Capacity Group, we focus on helping leaders and teams unleash their full potential, including hiring and onboarding. To learn more about how to find the best fit for new candidates or support their transition into your organization, please reach out. We’d love to assist you.
